From seed to tomato

It all starts with a tiny seed, which grows and turns into a renowned Tasty Tom tomato in several steps. Multiple companies and people involved put all their knowledge, passion, and energy in into delivering a delicious tomato. The Tasty Tom-chain put in the spotlight, step by step.

A unique breed

“As crop specialist I focus on the sale and cultivation support of the “specialties”. These are small tomatoes, from 10 to 80 gram. Tasty Tom is also a part of this. ENZA Zaden found a unique breed ninety years ago. Because of this unique flavour, but also due to the belief of the growers in their unique marketing actions did they turn Tasty Tom into a success.”

Good balance, generative and strong

“We are one of the nurseries that turn the seeds into beautiful plants. We have been doing this for twenty years, and thus we possess a lot of knowledge and experience. A good tomato plant has to be sufficiently strong and generative. It also has to be well balanced and have strongly developed bunches.”

The right balance of leaf and fruit

“From the moment the plants arrive at the company, it is my job to make sure they grow as well as possible. It takes about twelve weeks before we can harvest the first tomatoes. The plants are taken care of on a weekly base to make sure that they keep the right balance of leaf and fruit. This means turning them, taking out shoots, harvesting the tomatoes, et cetera. In short: many aspects contribute to delivering a delicious Tasty Tom tomato.”

We feel at home

“As the ‘Bumblebee family’ we have been ‘serving’ Tasty Tom for twenty years, and we are quite proud of that fact! This entire time we’ve been buzzing through the greenhouse, looking for plants with pollen, to build a nest for our queen. When we tap the flower, the pollen fall on the stem of that same flower. This results in a fertilisation after which a new tomato can grow, for tomato plants are self-pollinating. Our work at Tasty Tom is therefore very important, if I may say so myself!”

Harvesting in the right stadium

“We harvest with special harvest carts that have boxes on them. I instruct the employees on how ripe they can harvest the tomatoes; one customer may prefer them more red than others. On average, we harvest the plants in the greenhouse three times in a period of two weeks. The tomatoes cannot turn too red, for they will rip. The goal is harvesting the Tasty Tom tomatoes at the right stage!”

Packaging an different branch of ‘sport’

“The tomatoes are delivered here by trucks. In the delivery hall all tomatoes undergo a quality check. With packaging comes a lot of physical labour: every pack of tomatoes is manually weighed, the worker, also manually puts the readied product in boxes or crates. These are automatically stacked by a palletiser. Before the tomatoes go out the door, they are once again checked. The packaging of the tomatoes is not ‘just’ an extra thing we do, it is an entirely different branch of ‘sport’ within Tasty Tom.”

A branch on its own

“All Tasty Tom tomatoes are traded through ZON Fruit & Vegetables. One of our employees visits Tasty Tom growers and performs a quality check on a weekly base, because not all tomatoes physically reach ZON. Product checking done by an external and independent person is always important within horticulture. Growers often simply do not get the opportunity to examine their product. The entrepreneurs also often do not stay sharp and alert. To add to that, the opinion of an external individual is often very valuable.”

It is never boring

“All tomatoes produced by Tasty Tom growers find their way to trade and retail through me. As a member of the commercial team of ZON Fruit & Vegetables it is my task to remain in contact with the buyers of Tasty Tom tomatoes. We deliver to a select number of customers in various countries. My job means a lot of phone calls, being on the road a lot, and always switching between tasks. It’s never boring!”

MAURICE LANGESLAG, SALESMAN AT ZON FRUIT & VEGETABLES

A valuable part of our assortment

“Our customers had a need for a broader assortment of products. That is why we started selling vegetables and fruit apart from our own cultivation years ago. The majority of our products go to traders in Germany. Since a couple of years we also offer Tasty Tom tomatoes; a request from our customers! By now Tasty Tom is a valuable part of our assortment. It fits perfectly with what we want to offer our customers.”

A tasty experience for our customers

“In order to distinguish ourselves, we offer a wide variety of products with high quality. In this, Tasty Tom is a perfect fit! The Tasty Tom tomato is so delicious that it is a true experience for our customers; which I was often told at the beginning. I almost never ate tomatoes myself, until I tasted Tasty Tom. I also notice that many people are willing to pay a little extra for a good tomato. To assure I always have a fresh product, I keep my stock limited, which means a high circulation speed of the Tasty Tom tomato.

JO QUAEDVLIEG, EIGENAAR EET-IDEE QUAEDVLIEG IN HEERLEN

Tasty Tom has found its way to our kitchen

“In our kitchen we use a considerable amount of tomatoes; Coeur de Boeuf, beef tomatoes and of course Tasty Tom tomatoes are amongst these. We have been working with them for years. Tasty Tom tomatoes have a beautiful, rich flavour, and are for example perfect for making bouillon. This we use to cook our risotto; which gives it a delicious flavour! How would I describe the flavour of Tasty Tom? Intense, a bit sweet, fresh sour; a true rich tomato flavour. I always say: if you would blindly taste a product, you have to immediately know the brand. This is definitely the case for Tasty Tom!”

The tomato flavour I recognise from my childhood

“When I tried my first Tasty Tom eight years ago, it was like I discovered a whole new world. Before then, I usually just bought regular, round tomatoes. However, these did not taste much like tomatoes and had a hard peel. One time I decided to mix it up and bought a Tasty Tom tomatoes. These were deliciously fresh and juicy. You really taste the tomato flavour, which I recognised from my childhood. Ever since, I always buy two trays of Tasty Tom at Albert Heijn. I would not want anything else.”
